WTF is going on with Batman?

Those who know me know that I am a HUGE fan of DC Comics and more specifically the caped crusader known as The Batman. I've read great storylines such as The Long Halloween, The Killing Joke, Crisis on Infinite Earths, etc and sat through the average dailies with this great character... but now I'm in a crisis myself every time I pick up a new edition of the Detective comics the last year or so. They "killed" off Batman. Yeah you read that right, Grant Morrison and his staff of idiots sent bats to the caveman days by way of Darkseid's omega beam sanction and effectively ruined the DC universe by having Batman go missing. In issues such as 'Battle for the cowl' you have a host of competitors vying for the right to gain the mantle of the Batman. This is wrong on so many levels as well as infringing on the celebrated history of the iconic hero. You even have Jason Todd battling Damien Wayne in hopes of capturing the title of Gotham's protector. In the end of the issue they made the right choice (right by way of readers having no choice) of making Nightwing accept the cowl of his mentor.
Seriously what the heck is going on with DC comics?? Batman wasn't the only casualty of the war in New Earth as another iconic character, Martian Manhunter, apparently died by a gruesome burning death. After great stories such as the Death of Superman arc and the back breaking Bane issue DC finds themselves in a bit of a rut as fan reaction has turned in a massive negative withdrawl in sales since the first issue in the storyline. The solution? FIRE Grant Morrison and save the Dark Knight from humility for goodness sakes.
